I decided to base my specialized medical assessment of the movie character on Conrad Jarrett, the lead persona of the film Ordinary People. Conrad is 17 years old and it is the only child of Beth and Calvin Jarrett. The Jarrett's reside in the affluent suburb of Lake Forest, Illinois, wherever Calvin is actually a successful tax attorney. The Jarrett's have recently experienced a family tragedy, in which their oldest son, Money, drown within a boating car accident, while Conrad witnessed the complete event. Six month after the car accident, Conrad is becoming severely depressed, and slit his arms with a razor blade in a failed committing suicide attempt. His parents uncovered him unconscious in the bath room, and quickly committed him to a psychiatric hospital. This individual spent 8-10 months in treatment and has recently came back home, as well as resumed his classes by Lake Forest High School. He could be struggling socially, academically, and has a drained relationship together with his mother, Beth. Immediately following his discharge, Conrad continues to encounter nightmares, and flashbacks to the boating crash in which he watched his older brother pass away from drowning. He is also experiencing chronic agitation, appetite loss, poor concentration, and avoidance of his previous friends and extracurricular actions. When Conrad was receiving treatment, he was initially identified as having major depressive disorder with agitation, without lively suicidal ideation. He attends psychotherapy twice weekly with Dr . Tyrone Berger.

I have structured the Axis I associated with Post Upsetting Stress Disorder on the research of Conrad's symptoms, which will support my personal clinical decision. Conrad seeing his brother drowning is definitely the exposure to a traumatic celebration, which is the foundation of this disorder. This event features involved equally a loss in a loved one, as well as his response to the event containing involved strong fear, apprehension and hopelessness. In Conrad's case this individual has also reacted with messy and irritated behavior. Conrad is also fighting persistent re-experiencing of the function. This is shown by his frequent flackback memories, recurring distressing dreams, and a powerful negative psychological response to any kind of objective or subjective reminder of the distressing event. Conrad is also delivering signs of prolonged avoidance and emotional numbing, by keeping away from former close friends, quitting the swim crew, and an over-all withdrawal coming from significant life activities. He has demonstrated in his sessions with Dr . Berger that he is contains a decreased ability to feel certain feelings, particularly related to his brother's fatality. He in addition has shown in the interactions with others, that he feels the event improved him and has now not really made him " normal” to others. Relating to physiological response issues, Conrad has shown an increased difficulty dropping or remaining asleep, issues with anger, and concentration, considering that the traumatic function. The duration of his symptoms have been for more than one month, going out with back to the case itself, which was over one year ago. As well, each of Conrad's symptoms has lead to clinically significant distress or impairment including his existence, social relations, extracurricular activities, and all around important regions of functioning.

I have made the decision that no Axis II is present and so i have coded it since V21. 2009. Conrad does not demonstrate any kind of symptoms that indicate a personality disorder or mental retardation. His symptoms seem to have started after he experienced the tragic loss in his brother. In addition , Conrad does not possess any basic medical conditions that would be listed below Axis III.

In terms of Axis IV, Conrad has become experiencing serious psychosocial and environmental concerns since the death of his brother. Nevertheless , Conrad provides seemed to have trouble with problems relevant to his principal support group, particularly his mom, from a new age. His relationship with her is now even more drained since Dollar passed away. Conrad's mother, Beth, is a very...
